But why April 17th?
On April 17, 1853, the first agricultural school in Argentina was founded. The hope was to adapt French grapes to the soils of Mendoza.
This date symbolizes the transformation of the Argentine wine industry and the starting point for the development of Malbec, which is a worldwide emblem for Argentina.
Origin of Malbec
While Malbec is most commonly associated with South America (and Argentina in particular), its origin can be traced back to France. Malbec was once the most widely cultivated grape variety in the country and was also found in many Bordeaux blends.

- The date of this holiday commemorates Argentine President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's commission to Michel Pouget to bring some new grape varieties from France to Argentina. This happened on April 17, 1853.
- The term Malbec World Day comes from the Spanish term Malbec Mondo, which means Malbec throughout the world.
- According to scientific studies, conscious consumption of red wine is healthy for humans, as the antioxidants contained in red wine can prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.
- Bordeaux red wine is made from a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenere, and Malbec grapes.
- The color of red wine comes from the anthocyanin pigment found in the grape skins.
