Beat and Sandra Eichmann personally know all their winemakers in Australia and regularly visit these wineries over many years. Today, we would like to introduce you to Sevenhill Cellars, a winery with a rich historical and spiritual heritage.

The Historical Roots of Sevenhill Cellars

Beginnings in the 16th Century

The history of Sevenhill Cellars is deeply rooted in the early history of the Jesuits, a religious order founded in the 16th century by the Spanish courtier Inigo, later known as Ignatius of Loyola. He decided to dedicate his life to helping others, thus laying the foundation for the Jesuit tradition of education and service.

The Founding in Australia

In 1848, the first fathers and brothers of the Society of Jesus came to Australia to escape religious persecution in Europe. They settled in the Clare Valley, a place known for its picturesque hills. In 1851, they planted the first vines and began to focus on the local production of sacramental wine to support the liturgical needs of the growing Catholic community in Australia.

The Significance of Sevenhill Cellars Today

A Legacy of Excellence and Service

Sevenhill Cellars is not only the first winery in the Clare Valley, but it also symbolizes a deep connection between faith and agriculture. The winery is committed to the Jesuit heritage, not only by producing high-quality wines but also by serving as a spiritual center. It offers retreats and spiritual education for people from all walks of life.

A Meeting Place for Community and Spirituality

In addition to wine production, Sevenhill is also known for its stunning architecture, especially St Aloysius' Church and the associated crypt, where 41 Jesuits found their final resting place. These sites offer a unique insight into the spiritual and historical life of the Jesuits in Australia.
